Will AI ever be human?
No, to the first question. For the second question, “ever” is a long time. No one knows what will happen in 100 years, 1000 years or a million years.
Right now many people are scare mongering. Often they are AI developers wanting to get a bit of PR. When there’s so much money being thrown at AI, people will lose their morals and ethics. So, even people like Sam Altman are suggesting that AI needs regulation to make it “safe”.
So, what are the facts. AI is software. Well written software. So well designed it can fool people into thinking it is human. It can have a conversation, ie it has been programmed with so much information that it can appear to have a conversation. It can make sounds, like voices, it can be animated on video.
Just because it can fool you doesn’t make it real. The chess app I play has bots that can beat grandmasters. Those bots aren’t human. They just do better at chess.
I have no idea how many arguments I’ve had on X (Twitter) with bots instead of humans.
Soon I’ll be able to tell my car where I want to go and it will take me there. It might ever say “it looks like rain, do you want to stop to get an umbrella”, or “It’s nearly 1 pm. Do you feel like something to eat?” It’s not human, just very good software.
Yes, it will fool us. It doesn’t make it human. It’s going to get better, it’s going to use more knowledge. Yes, some of the knowledge it will use is rubbish, just like people who say “vaccines cause autism, do your research” and give a link to a Youtube video. Were I to do my research I would not use
a Youtube video. Until I receive my PhD, I’d rely on my doctor!
The point is AI is not sentient. It can appear to be, just like a magician can make a coin disappear, or cut a person in half. It can even say “I’m sad and upset”, but it’s a software programmed response.
Yes, it can say things that hurt you and frustrate you. Who remembers your PC saying “C:>Bad command or file name” and wanting to throw something at the screen?
